Case Study 1- Megaphone

Introduction
Megaphone is a voice recognition urban art installation in Montreal, New York. As the year passes by, real-life public speaking has become a bit of a lost art. Besides that, Montreal has been humming with demonstrations, elections, resignations and commissions for the past few years. Thus, Megaphone has been created to express oneself and to reclaim the art of public speaking. Furthermore, the goal is to create an interactive projection that expresses the individuality of each voice. It was developed under chief creators Alexandre Lupien, Technology Director at Moment Factory in Montreal. The installation was chosen to occupy the Promenade des Artistes(plaza) in the heart of Quartier des Spectacles(district), from September to November 2013.
With Megaphone, people are invited to share their ideas and opinions into a voice amplifier. Their words may relate to any subject but thoughts regarding the current status of the city of Montreal are encouraged. It creates an opportunity for the people in Montreal to make their voices heard loud and clear on their opinions.

Interaction
Megaphone give chance for people to shout from the rooftop into a megaphone. It uses voice-recognition technology that was developed by  the Computer Research institute of Montreal (CRIM) to capture the features of your voice—including speed, tone, the fluidity of phrasing—and to identify the words that are saying. Then it will convert your speech into unique moving visual images and project them against the Kennedy Building. Also, words from the speeches that have a modern aesthetic which resembles to website headlines and keyword widgets were chosen to be potrayed on the screen. Lastly, the speeches will also cumulatively produce a visual work that reflects the pulse of the city and its citizens after several of weeks.
