Case Study 1- The Interactive Punching Bag

Introduction

Interactive Punching Bag is an interactive installation to raise fund for cancer research. It was designed for Dutch NGO (Netherlands Development Organisation), Fight Cancer. For your information, Fight Cancer is a Dutch NGO that empowers people to set up their own activities to raise funds for cancer research. The Interactive Punching Bag is developed by designer, Thijs Biersteker. He had created a lot of interactive awareness installations regarding the world’s most pressing issues. This interactive installation had travelled to several gyms in the Netherlands. It successfully shows how digital technology and design come together with the real world, to raise awareness for a specific issue.

Interactive Punching Bag features a fully functional punchable screen that lets you see how cancer cells develop. This installation comprises technologies such as motion sensors, impact sensors and LEDs. Other than that, the LEDs screen shows animations of cancerous cells, based on gender, age and lifestyle of the participants and the impact of these cells have on them. Whenever someone punches the punching bag, a donation was made to a cancer foundation.

Interaction

For the first step, the participant has to enter their age, gender, lifestyle by using their fist. Then, the screen will show the highest risk cancer type that might threatening them. Once the fight starts, an animation of cancerous cells will appear on the screen. They have to punch the cells until they turn to become broken pieces. Once the fight was done, the system will calculate the total amount of donation based on the amount of punches.

Thoughts & Analysis

In conclusion, this is an interactive installation to fight cancer and to raise fund for cancer research. In this current society, people don’t show their concern on cancer patients so as the risk of getting cancer. I feel the installation is very meaningful because it encourages the people to make donation through a mini game. Besides that, it also conveys the message to the people that they have to stand together and fight against cancer. The design of the installation is very attractive because it consists of vibrant lights which easily grabs the attention of the people. I feel that such interactive installation should be done more to inspire people to make donation. If I've given the chance to do this, I will explore more on the punchable screen as it needs quite a lot of work to create a screen that can be punched without damaging the entire system.
